What to Pack in Your Athlete’s Gymnastics Bag
If you're new to gymnastics or just looking to streamline your weekly routine, knowing exactly what to pack in your child’s gymnastics bag can make a world of difference. Whether it’s their first class or their hundredth, being prepared means your child can focus on having fun, staying safe, and learning new skills, and you can relax a little bit and enjoy these memories!
Here’s our go-to packing list for every little gymnast:
1. Proper Attire
For Girls: A well-fitting leotard (with or without shorts) is ideal. (Check with your gym for dress code policies.) Avoid anything too loose or frilly—coaches and equipment don't mix well with tutus! NOTE: Underwear is optional when it comes to wearing a leotard. Some gymnasts will also choose to wear a sports bra underneath.
Optional: Pack a backup leotard or change of clothes—accidents or spills can happen!

2. Water Bottle
Jumping, rolling, and flipping is thirsty work! A spill-proof, labeled water bottle helps your child stay hydrated without needing to leave the gym floor.
Tip: Choose one they can open and close independently, and something insulated for those hot summer practices!

3. Hair Ties & Accessories
Hair should be tied back securely to avoid distraction or injury. Keep extra hair ties or clips in the bag for quick fixes. Scrunchies, bobby pins, or a small brush can be helpful, especially on busy school-to-gym days. Depending on your hairstyle, hair spray may also be helpful!

5. Grip Gear or Chalk (if needed)
If your child is using grips, wristbands, or chalk (more common in advanced classes), pack those in a separate baggie to keep things clean and organized.
We recommend purchasing grips directly from your gym club instead of online, as many gyms have strict policies regarding brand, grip type, & size.

🚫 What NOT to Pack:
Toys or electronics that may distract from class. Lock phones/tablets away in a tech case if theft is of concern. Something like this: https://amzn.to/4kvgb5p
Snacks (unless your gym allows them and there’s a break time)
Jewelry or anything that could cause injury. PRO TIP: If your athlete does wear jewlery regularly, consider packing a jewelry case like this: https://amzn.to/3ZTeqGW
In Conclusion, Keep It Simple!
Choose a bag that’s big enough to fit all essentials but not so large that it becomes a black hole. A small duffel, drawstring bag, or backpack works perfectly.
